June 2021: Technology Challenge

The things we own – including our tech – can have a big climate impact because of the fossil fuels involve in producing the raw materials that go into them, in manufacture, and then in transport.

But technology can also be a big help in tackling the climate and eco-crises.

So pick one of more of the following challenges to do this month – or make up your own.
  • ACTION: Switch your search engine to Ecosia. They plant trees in response to your searching and every search removes 1kg of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
  • ACTION: Reduce e-waste by donating unwanted old smartphones to Hubbub. They’ll clean them, data-wipe them and redistribute them to someone in need.
  • ACTION: Think about the next piece of technology you’re likely to buy and consider getting it second-hand, or maybe buy a Fairphone, made with repairability, sustainability and workers’ rights in mind.
  • CAMPAIGN: Let your MP know that France's National Assembly recently voted to introduce "repairability index" for appliances such as washing machines, lawnmowers, televisions and smartphones. The French government hopes that this will increase the electronics repair rate to 60% within five years. And ask your MP what the UK is doing to tackle its share of the roughly 52 million tonnes of e-waste created each year.
  • RESEARCH: Learn about progressive technologies by watching a video about ground source heat pumps or Passivhaus.
  • ACTION: Get the CHEESE Project folks round to your house to help you understand the energy efficiency of your home, and advise you on solutions.
  • ACTION: Switch from the car, with its complicated supply chains and huge carbon footprint (even before it begins to be driven), to a technology that’s simpler, healthier, cheaper, cleaner, and happier: the humble bicycle.
  • ACTION: A seminal technology that society is still yet to master: the lightbulb. LEDs are far superior in terms of energy efficiency, so consider making the switch.
  • RESEARCH: Think about whether solar panels could be a good idea for you.
  • AMPLIFY: Tell your friends and family about the challenges you’re taking this month and ask them to join in.
