December 2020: Energy Challenge

About 20% of UK carbon emissions come from home energy use, so using less power at home is well worth doing. You can reduce carbon emissions, contribute to cleaner air, and save money!

So take action and pick one of more of the following challenges to do this month – or make up one of your own.

  • ACTION: Look at last year’s bills and aim to reduce your power usage by at least 10% this winter.
  • ACTION: Stop those draughts and save up to a third of your heating energy. It can be as easy as stuffing clingfilm in the gaps in your sash windows!
  • ACTION: Not all ‘green’ energy tariffs are what they appear: take a look on Bristol City Council’s new Climate Hub, and consider switching to a better one.
  • ACTION: Pick an action from our advice sheet (below) on winter heating. Winter is coming!
  • RESEARCH: Check whether you’re eligible for a Green Homes Grant.
  • GET INVOLVED: Become a Bristol Energy Network energy champion! All sorts of things to do, including doing  bite-sized bits of research into energy saving.
  • CAMPAIGN: Burning woodchip for electricity is a disaster because the forests aren't being replaced! Get cracking with the Cut Carbon Not Forests campaign.
  • AMPLIFY: Tell your friends and family about the challenges you’re taking this month and ask them to join in.
